Κατά τη «Θεογονία» του Ησίοδου ήταν θυγατέρα του Ωκεανού ή του Νηρέα και της Τηθίος, σε εκδήλωση ίσως του ότι η ναυτιλία και το ναυτικό εμπόριο εν γένει υπήρξαν η πρώτη και κύρια πηγή ευτυχίας των ανθρώπων.
